The International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation, in association with the Northern Lighthouse Board, is hosting a Workshop on Future Radionavigation and Radiocommunication Systems, to be held in Edinburgh, UK, from 09 to 13 February 2026.
Registration is available here: Workshop on Future Radionavigation and Radiocommunication Systems – IALA
BACKGROUND
The need for consideration and discussion on future radionavigation systems and radiocommunication systems was recognised since emerging digital technologies could be used for both radionavigation and radiocommunication as one system, e.g., VDES R-mode, Galileo return link service.

TOPICS
The workshop deals with general Radionavigation and Radiocommunication aspects. This will include a range of topics, such as:
- Satellite communication systems
- Regulatory Constraints and Technical Capability
- Users’ view on radionavigation and communication
- VHF radio navigation and communication
- LF/MF/HF radio navigation and communication
- IMT and other technology

OBJECTIVE
The workshop is aimed at updating the worldwide radiocommunication plan (WWRCP, now updated as Maritime Radiocommunication Manual) maintained by DTEC and the worldwide radionavigation plan (WWRNP) maintained by ENG, as well as providing guidance to IALA members on this issue.
An IALA workshop that will be co-hosted by DTEC and the ENG Committee in order to give guidance to IALA members for the introduction of future radionavigation and radiocommunication systems.
ATTENDEES
The workshop will provide a forum for discussion between different stakeholders, which may include IALA national, industrial and associate members and sister organisations. Other interested stakeholders in Radionavigation and Radiocommunication are encouraged to attend to maximise the pool of expertise available.
VENUE
The workshop will be held at the headquarters of the Northern Lighthouse Board at 84 George Street, Edinburgh.

Location
The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) is based in the centre of Edinburgh New Town (84 George Street) and is easily accessible from both Waverly Station and the Tram from Edinburgh Airport.
